Gold bond trade starts on NSE


For the first time, trading in the sov ereign gold bond started on the NSE platform this week. The Reserve Bank of India and Sebi cleared trading in the new instrument recently.The product was launched in the cash segment of NSE to ensure ease of trading, wider reach and no additional procedure for regular investors to buy and sell through the exchange.

The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme was announced in October 2015. In this bond, investors get returns linked to gold prices. Additionally a fixed interest rate of 2.75% p.a. is payable semi-annually. The bonds carry sovereign guarantee on the redemption amount and the interest payable.The minimum investment size in the secondary market will be as low as 1 gm. Reference price for trading will be gold with 0.999 purity and as published by IBJA.

The period between January and March typically sees an uptick in the launch of fixed maturity plans, or FMPs. Not this year. Instead, fund houses are busy rolling over or extending the tenure of their one- year FMPs launched last year to three years. Investors in one- year FMPs have a choice.
