A multi-cap scheme with a clear large-cap bias, UTI Opportunities isn't shy of switching sectors and stocks, if the fund manager perceives a potential opportunity. The strategy has worked so far with the scheme outperforming its benchmark index — BSE 100 — consistently, for nearly five years now. Even during the meltdown year of 2008, the scheme succeeded in containing its downfall to about 49% while the BSE 100 fell by more than 55%. The fund's ability to protect its downside risk is also evident in FY12. The scheme's NAV has eroded by about 5% against a 9% decline in the BSE 100 since the beginning of the year. As far as investment strategy is concerned, Opportunities is currently focusing on defensive sectors. At the same time, the scheme is avoiding highly-leveraged companies, a strategy, that appears to be ideal in the current high interest rate regime.
